I am currently in the phase of rethinking my rig for iRacing/ other sims. The one I currently have isn't in the best shape, I kinda threw it together and actually surprised how long its held up for (which I think is just over a year). Screws are backing out, wood is splitting, not built square to begin with. I will be documenting the steps to the reconstruction of this thing, and hopefully making a multifunctional sim rig that suites racing titles as well as some flying sims (just getting into that genre recently). Here is a Sketchup of what I currently have, and some outdated pictures for now. I am currently working on Sketchup drafts of what I want, details on that later.
This is what I currently have for drafts on what I want to do. I would like to make all parts moveable in angle and position forward/ back aside from pedals. Pedals can be fixed position but still have angle adjustments.
Pedals: Still debating whether this will work, but thinking have pedals inverted and mounted to a hingle type system at the top. Cut out some tracks in plywood and have the ability to bolt through to the brace holding the pedals and tighten down with nut and bolt to secure in place
Wheel: Sort of the same system as the pedals, but instead having two tracks, one running vertical on the main structure of the rig, and horizontal cuts in the piece where the wheel will connect to. Then this will allow the tracks to move to different positions and allow for some different angles. Each side to be secured with 4 nuts and bolts each. The way my rig is setup currently, its difficult to get in and out because of the main supports being right at the seat, so here I have the wheel sticking out toward the driver because I have moved the supports back.
These both are just beginning stages, I want to get this right so I don't have to rebuild it at a later point. Trying to stick with wood materials because I don't know how to weld metal, and don't have access to one, and metal is a little more than I want to spend. Might look into 80/20 for the moving parts of this, but that might be when I try to rework some of this.
Still more to come. Looking to integrate a place for keyboard and mouse, shifter, need to purchase a real car seat, and find a way to mount a joystick for flying.
Ok, so after putting it on hold until I got a seat, here it is. My friend is building an enduro car and I got the passengers seat off him. Rebuilt it and turned out better than I thought. I took my time this time around, and it paid off. Even took some time to paint it. I still need to add some side panels for the pedals, but for now its great. I took the FoFoFu rig idea for tilt, and love it. Only have 2 sets of holes, but need to raise it up some and I think those 2 holes offer a lot of movability. I bought a TV for my dorm room, so not going to hook it up here yet, but when I come back from school I built a place to put the TV closer. Love my mouse pad spot too, wish I incorporated it on the last one, they last one I had to use a folding chair that wasn't flat :? Ok enough blabbing, here is what it looked like before the rebuild, and 7 hours later...
Before: (Took video and take too long to upload right now so took a screenshot from it)
